Discrimination has been all-too-common in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community for the last 100 years, and despite many advances, discrimination still takes place today. In his interviews and his outside research, Adam Quimby found LGBT people often face very different reactions from people in rural areas as compared to urban areas. Adam interviewed Bryan Thompson and Gary Berk, two local men who made a family with each other and later their children. They came from very different demographic backgrounds and have had very different experiences as gay men in their community. See the transcripts of his interviews and listen to the interviews here!
The word transgender was coined in 1979 as an umbrella term to describe the dissension of one’s gender identity within the narrow dualistic gender structures of today’s society. Since the vast majority of the population adheres to these gender structures, those who do not are often ostracized at some point in their lives. The causes of this ostracization are numerous and may vary on an individual basis. Natalie’s project specifically focused on three major factors of ostracization: the media, family structure, and monetary circumstances.
Through interviews with two trans women, Jane Doe and Jenny Doe, along with outside research, Natalie demonstrated how our culture shuns trans people because they do not fit its concept of gender expression. See the transcripts of her interviews and listen to the interviews here!
