Progress this semester:
Lightning Talks:
- Compton compositor
- Vulkan low-level graphics API
- Laptop tools
- RemixOS -- Android for the desktop!
- Powertop CLI Tool
- CPU State management tools (CPUFreq)
- OS X System Integrity Protection
- Vulkan Live Utility Demonstration(CPU Management)
- ...And a few more that got lost along the way.
Server Room:
- WAS maintainer of Comm, which currently runs an XMPP and Mumble server...
- However, a certain Graham Northup broke into it last semester...
- He made particular configuration changes that, eventually, became unrecoverable
- This lead to an ungraceful 'handoff' to Jared Dunbar, who wanted to rebuild it anyway.
- Wrote the core backup scripts for the VM machines
- Designed some unfortunately thorough sparsity-preserving rsync scripts for backup server
- Maintainer of the core backup server
- Added proper SSH-Key support to backup server
- Rebuilt Elephant when the memory inside of it spontaneously died
- Speced out and purchased power supply replacement for Felix and lab machines
New Mirror:
- Continually involved in discussion of new mirror purchases
- Directly involved in troubleshooting of new parts
- Was the one who figured out the details between SAS1 issues, alongside Bobby Newman
- Specced out the two UPS purchases for Mirror and the storage array
- Designated primary point of contact for 'The Great Mirror Crisis of 2016'
- Handled conversation/contact w/ seller, who originally offered support but rescinded it
- Worked further with Bobby Newman and Jared Dunbar to figure out potential solutions
- Dug through obscure documentation
- Held conversations with Corey Richardson about known configuration issues
- Bobby eventually found a drop-in replacement for our problem part
- I double-checked his work, confirmed, and ordered a SAS2 backplane
- ...Which was mis-shipped and came in as a SAS1 Backplane...
- But thanks to Bobby, that got returned, and New Mirror is now fully functional!
New VM Host:
- Drafted a formal proposal over the course of several weeks
- Created two initial configuration options, put it to a poll at a weekly Forum
- COSI settled on Opterons!
- With that, I spent another week figuring out prices and getting a final budget
- Fit everything into $3500
- Server entirely custom-built to get the best bang-for-the-buck
- Focus on parts with high endurance and long warranty
- Formal proposal was send out on 4/20/16, approved same day
- Proposal here!
Misc:
- WebGL-Tennis: COSI's primary source of entertainment!
- Proposed/followed through with purchase of labs iFixit Toolkit
- Setup leap motion on beast machines
- Was present at all network rebuild discussions
- Was involved in every one of the server room emergency meetings
- Fixed/flashed the BIOS on the beast machines to get USB3 working
- This involved finding some outdaded 404'd update packages and rolling them into a bios file
- Have been continually in discussion about what to do with OIT storage array
- Setup the Leap Motion on the beast machines
- Printer paper!
- Helped spec out new monitors
- Christmas cheer!
