Office of Information Technology

E-mail

Clarkson is in the process of migrating from our Lotus Domino/Notes e-mail system to Microsoft Exchange/Outlook. This migration will be taking place over the next 10 weeks, and is scheduled to be completed in early August.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is Clarkson changing email programs?

A: While the Lotus system was the right choice for the campus five years ago in terms of its features and place in the groupware marketplace, Clarkson has moved forward with new technologies with which Lotus cannot easily integrate. Moving to Exchange/Outlook will enable OIT to provide you better service and an e-mail system that integrates easily with the other programs you use every day, including handheld devices.

Q: What email system is Clarkson moving to?

A: We will be upgrading all cmapus computers with Microsoft Office 2003 which includes Microsoft Outlook, the email client you will use at work. Off campus, you will be able to access your email anywhere, anytime with Outlook Web Access (OWA) via Internet Explorer. Outlook will replace the Lotus Notes client and OWA will replace iNotes.

Q: Since I use Lotus Notes on my computer now, will I still be able to receive email over the summer at this address by going to the Clarkson website?

A: After the migration, you should use Microsoft Outlook rather than Lotus Notes to access your email from your work computer. Also, you will be able to access your email when off campus via a Clarkson website much the way you currently access your email using iNotes. We will publish more information about this site as the migration date draws closer.

Q: Does this mean if I request an update, OIT will update my computer?

A: The installation of Office 2007 on your computer can be upgraded, but there is a cost for this upgrade. Additional information will be available after the Exchange migration is complete.

Q: Is there someone that can help me set up Microsoft Outlook for my Clarkson email address this coming fall? If so, how would I request that?

A: You can request help by contacting the OIT HelpDesk at helpdesk@clarkson.edu or 315-268-4357. We will also post instructions for setting up Outlook on OIT's website.

Q: Can users see how much of their quota is in use?

A: Yes. Within the Outlook program, there is a method to view the amount of data you have stored on the server (which is what counts against your quota).
