Teaching Students with Learning Disabilities
In order for a student to receive services related to a learning disability, he or she must have presented thorough documentation to the Director of Accommodative Services. The testing conducted to document the existence of a learning disability must be comprehensive and current (generally within the past three years). Additionally, there must be clear and specific evidence of the existence of a learning disability. Terms like learning style and learning differences do not constitute the existence of a learning disability; the words learning disability must appear in the documentation.
Professionals conducting the diagnosis of the learning disability must be qualified to do so. These are trained and certified and/or licensed professionals. Diagnostic reports must include names, titles, and professional credentials of the evaluators and the date(s) of testing. Tests used must be statistically reliable and valid, and standardized for use with an adult population.
All documentation is confidential. When the student provides written permission to the Director of Accommodative Services, you will receive notification regarding the specific learning disability, how it may be expected to affect the student's learning, and the recommendations that have been provided by the testing diagnostician. Each case is treated on an individual basis.
