Clarkson Hockey TV Coverage

Media Advisory: Should the Clarkson Golden Knights Men's Ice Hockey team win this afternoon, they will play again tomorrow, Saturday, March 24, starting at 6 p.m., midway through the St. Lawrence game. Time Warner will join the Clarkson game in progress, after the SLU game on Channel 26.

However, for Clarkson fans, Time Warner has made a second channel available, so that they can watch the Clarkson game in its entirety.

At 6 p.m. on Saturday, you can find the Eastern Regional Final on Channel 96 in Watertown/North Country (Potsdam) and on Channel 76 in the immediate Syracuse area.

If Clarkson should not advance, Time Warner will pick up the East Regional Final in progress (around 7 p.m.) on Channel 26, and not provide the Channel 96 feed.

***************************************************

Reminder about today's hockey action:

Clarkson plays in the NCAA East Regional from Rochester today at 2:30 p.m. on Time Warner Sports Channel 26 in the Potsdam area. If you're in another part of New York state, the game is being carried on the FSN NY network on other cable systems. Consult your local cable guide for the channel number.

Professors with Blogs, Oh My!

Media Advisory: The Liberal Arts Colloquium Series presents Joseph Duemer, Professor, Humanities and Social Sciences Department, who will speak on Friday, November 10, in Bertrand H. Snell Hall Room 214 at 4 p.m. on "Professors with Blogs, Oh My!" Refreshments will be served.

About the talk: Weblogs as a form are more than a decade old, but have only been taken up by American higher education in the last few years. Weblogs--"blogs" for short--began as a way for computer system administrators to easily post updated information for their colleagues, with the most recent update at the top. Before long, however, blogs evolved into lists of annotated bookmarks pointing readers toward interesting places in cyberspace. Eventually, blogs branched out in several directions, becoming everything from very personal on-line journals to collections of photographs, and even academic discussion. Each kind of weblog has its own formal requirements and rhetorical conventions and it is now possible to speak of weblogs as a genre of writing that includes several sub genres.

There are two sorts of academic weblogs--those intended for student use and those in which faculty discuss their disciplines, their own work, or academic life in general. This presentation will discuss both sorts of weblogs, though the focus will be on the second kind, blogs written by academics about their own work. The presentation will conclude with a brief discussion of the technology that makes weblogs possible.

Mock Dorm Room Fire

Media Advisory: On Friday, November 3, there will be a demonstration burn of a mock dorm room in the lower Cheel Center parking lot at 3 p.m. The dorm room will be on display in front of the Cheel center from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Potsdam Fire Department will ignite the room and demonstrate a real-life fire situation.

The students in charge of the project worked closely with the fire department and Clarkson's Risk Management Department to ensure that the "burn" meets all campus and village safety requirements. The fire is being conducted because the RAs and students feel that fire safety is an important issue for the campus and community. The demonstration will provide a realistic perspective on the actual effects of fire and the severity of a relaxed attitude of fire safety. The mock dorm room and contents have been constructed to simulate an actual campus dorm room.

A majority of the materials for the room were donated by Triple "A" Building Center, and Clarkson's Maintenance Department. The remainder of the materials were paid for by the Executive Dorm Council, Hamlin Powers Dorm Council, and Residence Life.

The media is encouraged to attend this important fire demonstration. Please contact us to advise if you will attend.
