The Humanities and Social Sciences programs at Clarkson challenge students to think critically and incisively about ideas, people, society, and the human condition. Programs differ from those at many other institutions in three important ways: broader perspectives, external fields, and technology competencies. These programs provide excellent preparation for a career, for professional study (law, medicine and health sciences), and for graduate study and research.
Majors
Minors
Humanities and Social Sciences minor
programs require a plan of study and a minor's portfolio.
Disciplinary minors (five courses in one of the liberal arts disciplines, planned with advisor)
Thematic Minors (planned with an advisor)
Professions - Law, Medicine, or Physical Therapy
You can prepare for law school or medical school through
any of our degree programs via our pre-professional tracks.
By working closely with your advisor, you can easily meet
the basic requirements without extra courses. Law schools
have always valued analytical and communication skills. While
medical schools have always welcomed liberal arts majors,
the expanding social and ethical dimensions of health care
make a grounding in the liberal arts increasingly valuable
for doctors.
Interested in Clarkson's own Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program? If so, you can tailor electives to meet requirements through our Pre-Physical Therapy Program, which is open to students in any major.
Broader Perspectives
Clarkson's Humanities and Social Sciences programs
encourage students to think critically and incisively about
the people, society, and the human condition. You'll
confront the very issues that are energizing dialogues in
the world beyond Clarkson – in boardrooms, in legislative
chambers, in United Nations assemblies and in Hollywood studios.
External Fields
Are you aiming at a professional career? Studying the Humanities
or Social Sciences at Clarkson enables you to enrich your
degree with external fields, such as information technology
or marketing and advertising. The programs are flexible enough
for you to include significant coursework in business, communication
and information systems, science or even engineering.
Technology Competencies
Computers are revolutionizing every
aspect of education in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
At Clarkson, you can take full advantage of information technology
tools thanks to our rich environment of networked computing.
Every academic building offers a wealth of Internet connections
and wireless access points. Every dorm room has two Internet
ports.
Computers facilitate all kinds of communication among students, teachers and a multitude of information sources. Computers are taught, integrated into coursework, and serve vital research functions. Students begin mastering advanced computer and information technologies within their Humanities and Social Sciences courses, and many classes in other departments are available if you want to go further.
Recognized Faculty Scholars and Teachers
Perhaps the two greatest strengths of our programs
in Humanities and Social Sciences are the excellence of
the faculty and the high degree of personal attention we
give to students.
All faculty are active scholars and many have achieved national or international recognition through, for example, Fulbright or National Endowment for the Humanities appointments and grants. At the same time, students consistently praise the effectiveness of our professors' teaching.
