New applications of quantum physics for devices have been
developing explosively, in such areas as quantum computing,
quantum communication and cryptography, spintronics, and quantum
effects in nanosize semiconductor and mechanical devices.
The Center for Quantum Device Technology is an interdisciplinary
research hub for these topics, housed primarily in the Departments
of ECE and Physics, at Clarkson University. The first Quantum
Device Technology Workshop took place in May 2002. It has
received good response from all the participants, and, following
the participant suggestions, the event was made bi-annual
and will have a focus. In 2004, we hope to emphasize the topics
of spin and spin-polarization control for quantum information
and spintronic applications, broadly defined. We hope to keep
the event not too large, limited to approximately 60 participants,
with a "cozy" atmosphere and the main goal being networking
in this emerging field.
