The purpose of a team design project is to provide students with a chance to practice (and therein gain some experience in) contemporary mechanical design methods as best one can in an academic environment.
A list of approved team design projects is provided on this page. Students can also propose project topics.
All team projects must be approved in advance by the course coordinator. Requirements for all team design projects are also listed below.
Absolutely Essential Requirements: All projects must have/involve a -
- Faculty Advisor (willing & with expertise to provide meaningful advice)
- Team Experience (no one/two-student projects)
- Basic Engineering Focus (design based on engineering science)
- Realistic Budget
- Involve Evaluated Physical Prototype (no paper & pencil only projects)
- Realistic Prototype Fabrication Component (students able to fabricate)
- Realistic Scope of Effort (not too much/little effort)
- Safe Overall Experience (no dangerous projects)
In addition to all of the above requirements, all it is strongly suggested that projects have a strong and articulated energy theme. By this it is meant that the design process should involve the design of a device that involves the transformation of energy to a significant extent. This purpose has to be clearly documented in order for the project to be approved.
