Calculus ABCs:
Instruction for Grading
General Instructions:
- Only the answers written in the boxes count
- Right answer: mark with check (5 points)
- Wrong answer: mark with X (0 points)
- NO PARTIAL CREDIT (except as noted below)
- Correct answers in different form receive full credit
(except as noted below)
Specifics:
- Equations of lines not in the form specified (point-slope vs.
slope-intercept): 5 points off
- Incomplete simplification of algebraic/exponential/logarithmic
expressions (where the problem says "simplify:"): 5 points off
- Other incomplete simplification: 2 points off
- Roots instead of factors or vice-versa: 5 points off
- Problems requiring more than one answer (for example, find the
roots of a quadratic equation):
- correct but incomplete answer: 3 points off
(for example, only one of two roots)
- one correct answer plus another incorrect answer: 5 points off
(for example, one correct root and one incorrect root)
- More answers than required: 5 points off
(for example: two values for arctan)
- Values of inverse trig functions in degrees rather than radians:
5 points off
- Missing information on graphs:
2 points off for each of the following (cumulative, to a max of 5):
- the value of any intercept, min/max, or asymptote is not labeled
- for ex, e-x, or ln(x), the y-scale is not
indicated by labeling an additional point such as (1,e), (-1,e), or (e,1)
- Wrong information on graphs: 5 points off
- Correct formula for answer but changed variables (e.g., from t to x):
2 points off
- Differential instead of derivative (i.e., including dx, dt, etc.):
2 points off (each time)
- Missing constant of integration: 2 points off (each time)
- "Find a function whose derivative is ..." does NOT require a constant of
integration (NO points off if the constant is there or not)
- Antiderivative involving ln(x): no penalty for omitting absolute
value signs
- Units missing: 2 points off
- Units wrong: 4 points off
