Curriculum & Format
The EGOM program draws its core and elective course offerings from the University's Schools of Business, Engineering, and Arts & Sciences. This provides participants with a number of opportunities to customize a graduate education around a specific career path or individual interest.
Core Courses
The curriculum consists of eight core engineering and non-engineering
courses, of which participants must complete any six for a total
of 18 credit hours.
Elective Courses
The remaining three courses (9 credit hours) may be taken from a
variety of business and engineering disciplines. Participants vote
each year on the elective courses that will be offered the following
year. Typical elective courses include:
Special Project
The M.S. degree culminates with a research-based capstone project,
integrating course concepts and often focusing on an application
from the participant's workplace. This offers sponsoring organizations
an opportunity to realize immediate benefits and allows participants
to incorporate and apply knowledge in a meaningful and value-added
context.
Participants enrolled in MF687, Special Project, are paired with a faculty advisor with expertise related to the topic and a problem statement is formulated. Students must prepare and deliver an on-campus presentation that outlines the project topic, planned research and results. The project is then conducted independently and a written paper submitted to the faculty advisor for consideration.
Residency Requirements
The EGOM degree is administered through a combination
of residence- and distance learning-based courses. On-campus sessions
are scheduled each May over a five-week period. During this time, two
three-week courses are held back-to-back with the third week overlapping.
Participants may choose to attend the first three-week session or the
second three-week session to complete one course, or may attend all
five weeks to complete two courses. Courses are scheduled Monday
through Friday from 8 – 11:15 a.m. which allows time in the
afternoons to check in with the office or complete team-based assignments.
Participants must attend a minimum of three on-campus summer sessions
(not consecutively) throughout the program.
Web-based Courses
Web courses are offered in the Spring, Summer and Fall semesters
and begin with an on-campus "kick-off" weekend requiring
one overnight stay. During this time, participants collect needed
books and materials, meet the instructor and their classmates, and
receive eight to 10 hours of introductory instruction face-to-face. The
remainder of the course is completed over a 10-12-week semester
from a home or office location using the Internet and telephone
conferencing. The instructor leads weekly online sessions, making
it possible for all course participants to speak with and hear the
instructor and each other in "real time", creating a virtual
classroom environment and more closely simulating the on-campus
interactive experience.
Program Duration
Most participants complete the program in three to five years, although it
is possible to finish in less than three years taking advantage of all Web courses
offered.
